Turned from one piece of European oak rather than glued up, so the grain runs continuously from the base to the lip and the piece has no seam to open up in a dry flat. The candle sits in a removable brass cup, which is the part that matters: wax that runs down inside a bare wooden socket has to be dug out with a knife, and a cup lifts out and gets warmed under a tap instead. It takes a standard 22 mm dinner candle. The base is 9 cm across with a felt pad underneath, wide enough that the thing does not tip when someone leans across the table, which is the only safety claim we will make about an object with an open flame on top of it. The finish is hard wax oil, matte, and it will look dry after a year of dusting; a thin coat of the same wax brings it back in ten minutes.
